Heritage Lab Ramsgate’s proposals to rebuild the Marina Bathing Pool in Ramsgate are featured in the latest issue of Country Life Magazine. The article discusses the role historic seaside places can play in shaping thriving coastal communities, and also confirms that discussions about the project with Thanet District Council and a developer are ongoing. The bathing pool was demolished and replaced with a car park in the 1970s. “It is our responsibility not only to value seaside heritage because it tells us where we’ve come from, but because it can tell us where we’re going,” says CEO Rob Kenyon.

Thanet District Council has agreed the sale of the Pierremont Park depot in Broadstairs to an unknown commercial bidder. This follows a campaign calling for Broadstairs and St Peter’s Town Council to be allowed to take ownership of the plot for community use. Campaign group Friends of Pierremont Park criticised the decision and said that it would continue to “fight this tooth and nail.”
Dane Valley Woods is calling for volunteers to assist in clearing and replanting the acre of vegetation lost to a wildfire - now believed to be arson - earlier this month. August 16 and 30 will be taken up with clearance and preparation of the area. Then September 27 and October 25 will be given over to maintenance and replanting. Find out more.
Pie Factory Music in Ramsgate’s in-house record label Wantsum Music has released the debut tracks by three Thanet-based musicians aged between 15 and 18. Collected together as an EP titled Chasing Stars, the songs are Appetite for Summer by soulful duo mood, Don't Need You by singer-songwriter Lois French, and Constellations by pianist and vocalist AZZA. Margate Electronics has put out two new releases on cassette and download. They are The Joanne Duo by Yuku & Danny, recorded live at Cafe Oto in London, and (Ne)Žmogus by Tomas Jefanovas. Neither release is available on streaming platforms.
Filmmaker Sidonie Carey-Green has published her first book, Surveillance Technologies in Performance and Migration. Based on her the Body as Data project, which transposed stories of migration into movement and dance along the East Kent coast, it’s out now via Bloomsbury. Find out more.

101 Social’s Cliftonville Community Kitchen is currently raising funds to keep it going while it awaits the outcome of several grant applications. Every Sunday, the volunteer-run initiative provides freshly cooked meals to around 100 people, using surplus ingredients donated by local organisations, traders and residents. Money raised will go towards takeaway boxes, extra ingredients, energy costs, equipment, repairs and maintenance. Donate now.
The White Room Meditation on Broadstairs High Street is set to close on Saturday, August 29. However, it’s not the end. Owner Michelle will continue to offer services online, and her workshops and classes will be mobile. In a recent statement, she said, “I felt the niggle at the beginning of the year and started to feel a little stuck in the shop. This grew to a need to expand and rediscover my freedom and creativity again. No one knows what’s coming and sometimes that’s the exciting part of starting a new chapter.”
