A teaser for this year's Margate Film Festival, a party at Pie Factory Music, an EHRC drop-in and more. Lots of dates for your diary over the coming weeks.

The programme for this year’s Margate Film Festival is not due to be announced until Wednesday, but they’ve let slip one brilliant sounding event. MFF is teaming up with Chump’s Comedy for a double bill of King Rocker - a documentary on cult indie band The Nightingales - and Oxide Ghosts: The Brass Eye Tapes, on the classic Chris Morris satirical series. The screenings will be followed by a Q&A with the  director of both films Michael Cumming and comedian Stewart Lee. Tickets on sale on Wednesday.

Pie Factory Music is putting on a party to mark one year since the start of their #SaveOurYouthCentre campaign. The youth charity is awaiting a final decision on their proposal to remain in their home at Ramsgate Youth Centre by Kent County Council. A year into the fight to stay, the organisation wants to say thank you to the local community for their support over the last twelve months. Margate Pride, Margate Black Pride and Trans Club Margate are hosting a drop-in session for anyone concerned about the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s proposed changes to its Code of Practice for Services, Public Functions and Associations. The changes were put to a public consultation following the UK Supreme Court judgment earlier this year that the legal definition of a woman under the Equality Act 2010 to be based on biological sex. The session will take place at CAMP in Cliftonville on Tuesday, October 28 from 7pm

Actor and writer Katie McGarry will be performing her one-woman comedy musical You’re Not in the West End Now at the Arden Theatre in Faversham on Saturday, October 25. The show draws on autobiographical stories to flip the glitz of London’s theatre scene. Tickets £10

MOP will be taking over Bar Ingo in Broadstairs for two weeks in November, cooking up a menu full of bold fusion flavours. They’ll be in the kitchen from November 7-14 from Friday to Monday both weeks. Book your table now

Drag artist Father JC will be performing Father JC’s Holy Show at the Tom Thumb Theatre in Cliftonville on October 22-23. It promises “an unforgettable night of music, mayhem, and a little bit of holiness.” Tickets £14

Margate Electronics is back for its tenth edition in December. Loula Yorke, Microcorps and M2C will perform live on Friday, December 5 at Margate Arts Club. ALM will also be set up to demo their latest modular synth products. Tickets £10

The Rare Steak Supper Club is putting on a three course feast at Seabird in Ramsgate on October 24. A classic menu of prawn cocktail, followed by ribeye steak and an almond tart, it’s £40 a head. Wines on the night will be hand-picked by Uncharted Wines. 

Margate’s Social Singing Choir have announced Film Night, where they will be performing iconic songs made famous on the silver screen. There will also be a surprise special guest, and attendees are invited to dress in their film premier best. Tickets £12

Film critic Anna Bogutskaya will be discussing her new book on the attraction of horror movies, Feeding the Monster, at the Fort Road Hotel in Margate on Thursday, October 30. She will be in conversation with local writer Ryan J Smith. Free tickets

Cliftonville Chess Club launched at Lowlife this week. Now Ramsgate’s getting in on the action. The excellently named Rhythm of the Knight Chess Club meets every Thursday at Seabird. While busting out your best moves, you can also enjoy cocktails and the venue’s top notch hi-fi.

The fabulous ELZ will be at CAMP in Cliftonville on Friday, October 28 performing jokes, poems and songs, as well as introducing a line up of other great acts. Tickets £6.

New film club Keeno is launching on Tuesday, November 4 at Big Shot in Margate. With a book club style set up, the monthly meet up will ask members to watch two films on their own time, before turning up to discuss them with the group. Hosts Dan Levy and Jack Goldstein will also offer up related articles and other reading material to help you prepare. DM to find out more

Thanet Book Club have announced that their next read will be A Grave Inheritance by Felicity Epps - notable because she is a former member of that very book club. Recently published by Hachette, Epps’ debut novel is a supernatural crime thriller aimed at the young adult market. If that sounds up your street, the group will meet at the Broadstairs branch of Forts at 7.30pm on Monday, October 27

The first Kent Pop Exchange showcase is set to take place at Where Else in Margate on Thursday, October 23. The three young music acts performing will be Canterbury’s Polo Lounge and Fuji Hideout, and The Rambling Club from Tunbridge Wells. Tickets £5

The next Kent Whisky Explorers night at Little Swift in Margate will be on Thursday, November 27. This one will be all about Islay whiskies. It will also be a fundraiser for Movember, with host Paul Vig rocking a tasche in memory of his late father. As well as the whisky tasting, there will be a charity raffle, with prizes donated by a number of local businesses. Email kentwhiskyexplorers@gmail.com to book in.
