East London Shakespeare Festival is bringing a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream to Broadstairs Bandstand on Friday, July 31. The show will be free, courtesy of Broadstairs & St Peter’s Town Council. It will start at 6.30pm. More info.
Tideline is putting on free coastal walks for young people aged 16-29 over the summer. Aiming to build a greater connection with the coastline, walks will include guided exploration of the shoreline, reefs and rockpools, and information on the ecological challenges found at sea. Walks will begin at Botany Bay on July 26 and September 29, and at Stone Bay on August 23. All start at 11am. Free tickets.
Kent Whisky Explorers is branching out for its next event on Friday, September 25 with a rum tasting, Taking place at Little Swift in Margate, you’ll get to sample a selection of rums from the Caribbean region. Find out everything you ever wanted to know about seaweed with Thanet Coast Project next month. A two hour walk and talk will give you a crash course in the plant, including its strange life cycles, historic connections and medicinal uses. Takes place at Dumpton Gap, Broadstairs from 10.30am on Thursday, August 20. Suggested donation £5.
Bright side-looking club night Optimissimo will take over the Sun Deck in Margate on Friday, August 14 to spread the happy vibes even further. Resident DJs Miski and Orac808 will be joined by DJ Leepy. Free entry.
Optimissimo adjacent new conference the Festival of Optimism is set to take place in locations around Thanet on October 1-3. The event will celebrate the people, places and ideas that give hope for the future. Events will be held at ARK in Cliftonville, Centenary Hall in Ramsgate and other TBA locations around Thanet. Artist Krishna Shanthi will be showing new exhibition The Blue Garden at Limbo in Margate on August 14-18. The work comprises digital collage, textiles, painting, found imagery and archive material, tracing recurring interests in Hindu iconography, queer visual culture, Sri Lankan histories and the colour blue. There will be a drinks reception on Saturday, August 15 from 5-8pm.
If your electronic music tastes veer extremely leftfield, then you’re going to love Shadowlands Festival, which is set to take place at the Gulbenkian Centre in Canterbury on July 1-4 2027. There will be a chamber orchestra performance of some of Foetus' greatest hits, plus live sets from artists including Lustmord, Test Dept, Githead, People Like Us, Sophie Sirota and more. Ramsgate wine bar Penelope has announced a party to celebrate its third birthday on Saturday, August 1. Soundtracking the event will be renowned DJ Andy Norman, best known as one of the original team behind Hed Kandi. Penelope’s own Jim Breese will also be playing tunes. Open from 1pm, DJs from 6pm.
