Writer, critic and curator Martin Gayford gives a talk on the life, work and ideas of his longtime friend David Hockney, who died earlier this year. Delivered at Turner Contemporary in Margate on Friday, October 23, the talk will take place in front of Hockney’s giant artwork currently on show in the gallery’s Sunley Window. Tickets £15.

Crusty supper club Crimp returns for a night of hearty pies at George & Heart. Taking over the kitchen on Wednesday, October 21, with sittings at 6.30pm and 7.30pm, it’s three courses. Tuck into an autumnal menu like smoked chalk stream trout, braised short rib and bone marrow suet pie with walnut ketchup. Vegetarian option available. £38.50 per person.
A Botanical Journey: Plants, Potions & Perfume offers a unique opportunity to experience the gardens at Quex Park’s Powell-Cotton Museum in Birchington next month. On October 2 and 9, join the head gardener for a guided walk and talk on how plants have shaped medicine and inspired folklore. Then watch a live steam distillation with Broadstairs Botanticals, providing you with a fragrance from the garden to take home with you. Tickets £15.
For four weeks (Oct 4, 11, 25 + Nov 1) Cafe del Margs is putting on American comfort food feasts with their American Super Club series; think meatloaf, chicken pot pie, pot roast and baked ham. Available 12pm-6pm and booking is advised.
Thanet Trans Club hold their very first health hub on Tuesday, October 13. Head to 276 Northdown Road in Margate between 6pm-9pm to peruse the clothes swap rail, have some clothes altered, try binders, get advice on hair and make up, as well as mental health support and legal advice.

Kit Proudfoot’s performance of his new work in progress stand up show this week was very funny. If you missed it, he’s doing it again. He’ll perform an updated version of Little Defeats of the Heart at Big Shot in Margate on Wednesday, November 18. Honestly, it’s quite a story. Tickets £5.
Sketchbook Club launches at the Royal Albion Hotel in Broadstairs on Sunday, October 11 from 10.30am to midday. Hosted by illustrator Yasmina Jameel, there will be no set activity, instead offering an opportunity to create alongside and meet other people who love to draw. Free entry.
Screaming Alley heads to Canterbury Festival on Thursday, October 29 for a night of chaos, filthy humour and dark cabaret with a hint of Halloween. Hosted by Charlie Partridge, the night features Pat Riarchy, poet Violet Malice, circus performer Danny Ash and more. On at Malthouse Theatre at 8pm. Tickets from £19.
New literature festival Island Festival takes place at the Walpole Bay Hotel in Cliftonville on October 18-24. A project of the Isle Write writers group, it has a programme of writing workshops, readings, open mics and live music. Find out more.
It’s Banned Books Day on Saturday, October 10. At a time when ever more books are being banned or otherwise censored, join a protest on the steps at Margate Main Sands at 11am that day. Bring your favourite book deemed unsuitable for human eyes, sit down and get reading. Books will be available to borrow for those whose collections are squeaky clean.
The Pavilion in Broadstairs will host a daytime disco on Sunday, November 22. Curated by Margate venue Olby’s, the playlist will be 80s and 90s banger only. Kicks off at 3pm and finishes at 8pm, so you’ll still be fresh for Monday morning. Earlybird tickets £10.
