Turner Contemporary’s new show, Sophie Calle: Something Missing? opens today. It is the French conceptual artist’s first institutional exhibition in the UK since 2009, pulling together photography, video and installation works that date back to 1986.
The selected works are deeply human. They are voyeuristic, tender and intimate, shaped by dry wit and sharp intellect and unified with such clarity by the theme of absence, “the absence is present”, as Calle said, addressing the turn out at Turner’s press call.
The exhibition is full of emotional integrity and conceptual clarity that makes the presented ideas seem so simple, but also anything but - if you want to know what we thought about it, read on:

If not, we've got plenty of other things for you. Not least an interview with Margate filmmaker Leigh Brooks about his documentary Magic in the Mundane. A trip into spirituality and the wonderment that can be found all around us, the documentary is screening next weekend as part of the Sporefaring Mushroom Festival at ARK. We spoke to Leigh about the process of making the film and about tapping into the magic all around us.
