How was your bank holiday weekend? Ours consisted of a glorious few days at Smugglers Festival. Well, glorious aside from the downpour on Saturday morning when we learned that our tent was not, in fact, waterproof.
It’s such a magical little festival with so many chapters. Musical highlights included headline sets from Bub L’Buz and Mermaid Chunky, a frantic midnight show by University, beautiful layered loops of violins from Anna Phoebe, a 5am trad folk session, and an unexpected collaboration from Jack Goldstein and Fruit Band. Also, special mention has to go to the amazing performance of Rage Against The Machine’s second album Evil Empire that closed out the weekend.
There was also an incredible grilled mackerel dinner that I’m not going to forget in a hurry, hours spent watching a professional fire builder at work, and the always entertaining sock wrestling tournament.
If you’ve never made it to Smugglers, put it on your bucket list now. It’s so much fun, and is filled with so many familiar Thanet faces that it feels like a big end of summer party surrounded by friends.
There’s more strange and intriguing music coming our way next weekend at this year’s Ramsgate Festival of Sound. Ahead of that, for this week’s feature we spoke to Look Mum No Computer, who will be headlining the closing show of the weekend at the Granville Theatre. He chatted to us about his plans for the performance and his experience of representing the UK at Eurovision.
