This week, the circus is in town. Revel Puck Circus’ big top has been hoisted up on Ramsgate’s Government Acre.
The contemporary circus act was full of impressive acrobatics, balances, aerial work and two wannabe clowns with a gentle humour. The tent was a near constant clamour of cheers and claps.
I spent much of the show in awe of the strength, agility and acrobatic talent of the performers. Whereas I can’t manage one star jump without the risk of peeing my pants, one performer was spun around from her head by another who was doing circle work on rollerskates. One segment saw one performer flip another repeatedly using his feet, while two more spun around in every direction inside two human-sized hula hoops that were in constant movement.
The eight-year-old boy beside me lost his mind over the show. Slow to warm up with the clapping and cheering, he loosened up to start squealing and whooping and clapping at the acts. With each new section he declared the performers were robots, in disbelief of their talents. At the end of the performance I asked if he enjoyed it, to which he replied, “Yes. I’m going to buy some merch.”
You have until tomorrow before the tent is packed up and the troupe moves on. Scroll down to find out how to get 15% off tickets.
Looking to the week ahead and beyond, we’ve got green-fingered volunteering opportunities, summer holiday activities, new food options, music, exhibitions and more. And speaking of food options, in this week’s feature we’ve got a round up of Thanet’s best brunch spots.
