Deal agreed to reopen Margate Winter Gardens, new book published by a Ramsgate-based artist explores different experiences of the menopause, new Cabaret club The Alley Bar gets ready to welcome audiences. This and more creative and cultural news from across Thanet.
Thanet District Council has agreed a new a 999 year lease and a grant of £4 million for Westwood One Theatre to refurbish and reopen Margate Winter Gardens. "The council’s ambition has always been to bring this magnificent building back to life, and with Westwood One Theatre, we have found a partner whose vision and dedication align with ours," says TDC's Director of Place, Bob Porter. As well as refurbishing the building's two theatres - set to reopen in April 2027 - Westwood One's plans include installing a rooftop bar, drama school and nursery.
Ramsgate artist Catrin Osborne has published A Portrait of the Menopause. The book features photographs and interviews with over 70 women discussing their experience of the menopause. It began life as an exhibition, which toured the UK in 2022, and was initially crowdfunded before being picked up by Black Dog Press. A launch party takes place at Ramsgate Music Hall tonight.
The Alley Bar members club on Ramsgate High Street has confirmed that it will open its doors on November 20. Launched by cabaret production company Screaming Alley, it promises a programme of "radical, queer, feminist and inclusive live art and performance.” Membership fees will be used to ensure that all performers are paid fairly. Among those set to play the venue in its first months are Diane Chorley and Jonny Woo. Join now from £5 a month.
The Off Season art festival has put the call out for artists and venues to participate in January. Last year over 150 artists took part, with exhibitions all over Margate for three days. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, December 17. Apply now. The festival takes place on January 23-25.
Little Wave in Broadstairs has reopened its doors after pivoting to become a deli. The former cafe offers a range of delicious food items from local and independent makers. While a full sit down meal may no longer be on offer, you can still grab coffee and sandwiches.
Confessional theatre show Letters You’ll Never Send is seeking anonymous letters for a special Christmas edition of the show in December. Got a bone to pick with Santa? A festival confession you could never tell? You can submit letters to be performed on stage now. The show will be at the Tom Thumb Theatre in Cliftonville on Thursday, December 11. Tickets on sale soon.
