Rise Up Residency's latest sea conservation-themed mural, a call out for winter clothes for toddlers in need, a great opportunity for designers and more. This week's creative and cultural news from Thanet and beyond.

KMG’s new mural Maidheann Mhara (the Sea Maiden) in Broadstairs’ Albion Street car park was unveiled last weekend as the latest Rise Up Residency artwork. You can see pictures here, but we’d really recommend getting down to see it in all its glory. A second mural in Westbrook - called The Shark Whisperer - has also now been completed, with work set to begin on another in Margate.

Margate Soul Festival is looking for a graphic designer to create a snazzy logo for its 25th anniversary festival in 2026. Got some ideas? Send an email to hello@olbyscreativehub.co.uk.

Kinder Collective in Broadstairs wants your child’s old coats, jackets and pramsuits to donate to families who need them. Drop your donations off to either Kinder Collective or the Old Curiosity Shop around the corner in Broadstairs, for collection by the Community Clothes Bank. Go through those wardrobes, the drive is open until the end of the month, and please make sure clothes are washed and in good condition.

We included Seabird in our recent Thanet brunch spots round up, although we noted at the time that the menu was more lunch than brunch. Well, good news, that list inclusion is now fully legit. The Ramsgate restaurant has launched a full brunch menu. Scrambled eggs, waffles, bacon and cocktails are now available on Saturday 9am to midday and Sundays 9am to 3pm

The Wooden Box Cafe in Ramsgate is now Dawnies Coffee Shop. It’s still the same team, just a new sign above the door. Open six days a week, pop in for coffee and snacks, and to check out the latest exhibition on the Yellow Art Wall.

Do you have a connection to Sussex? If so, Hastings Contemporary and Sussex Contemporary have teamed up to launch their first open exhibition, which is now open for submissions. Set to take place next spring, the exhibition’s theme is Odyssey, “reflecting on journeys shaped by tides, time, and transformation, on the restless call of the sea and the stories it inspires. Hastings, a place long defined by its proximity to the coast, provides a fitting setting for such explorations”. The team welcomes works that engage with marine ecology, climate change, and the fragile richness of coastal life. It’s £15 to enter and you must do so by January 18.

Got a show you want to put on in front of a crowd? Brighton Fringe has opened registrations for next year’s festival. Register by December 5 to receive the early bird discount. More details.
