The Canterbury Festival returns from October 17 to November 1, bringing a diverse range of arts performances and talks to the city. Among the names set to appear this year are Richard Ayoade, Bob Mortimer, Evelyn Glennie, Turin Brakes, Alistair McGowan, Sebastian Faulks, Kiell Smith-Bynoe, and Elf Lyons. See the full programme.
Brighter Days Academy has announced a series of workshops to help makers, artisans, craftspeople, and artists to build their businesses and find new customers. There will be sessions on telling your story, photography and digital marketing. These will lead to the production of a Brighter Days magazine, in which you can feature. The next Kent Whisky Explorers tasting night will turn its attention to Indian whisky on Thursday, September 18 at Little Swift in Margate. You’ll be guided through a range of different offerings by host Paul Vig. Tickets go on sale today.
Greenwich+Docklands International Festival has announced the line up for its ‘festival within a festival’ Dance City in the borough of Newham. A total of 15 UK and international dance companies will present free performances in locations around Stratford Town Centre and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London on Saturday, September 6. Currently touring the UK, children’s theatre show Caspian’s Storm comes to Pierremont Hall in Broadstairs on Wednesday, August 6. Created by LAS Theatre in collaboration with children from Margate primary schools Cliftonville, Drapers Mills, Palm Bay and Northdown, the interactive musical tells the story of a curious crab. Suitable for kids aged 4+. Starts at 1pm. Free entry.
Cirque du Mar-Gay will be putting on a night of circus performance at Faith in Strangers on Thursday, August 7. Titled The Gayest Showman, the show’s ringmaster for the night will be drag king Mercury Rizing. Profits from the night will be donated to Margate Pride. Tickets £10.
Stand up comedian Simon Evans will be performing his new show Simon Evans is Staring at the Sun at Ramsgate's Granville Theatre on Thursday, February 5. That is a way off, yes. Ticket’s £21.45.
The Diaries of Note newsletter is becoming a book and live show later this year. The Letters of Note spin-off will be at Cadogan Hall in London on Monday, October 13. As well as the private musings of famous diarists, three members of the public will have their diary entries read on stage too. With permission, of course. Submit yours by emailing shaun@lettersofnote.com. Performing them will be Diaries of Note founder Shaun Usher, plus actors Louise Brealey and Matt Berry. Tickets from £39.50.
Margate Assembly has announced its first all-day event, with eight hours of music from local musicians on a stage in Margate Yacht Club’s storage yard on Saturday, September 20 from 1-9pm. Full line up yet to be announced. Tickets £33.38. The next regular Assembly night will be at Off Licence in Cliftonville this Wednesday.
Local promoter Awkwardness Happening will release a cassette sampler featuring four Margate bands next month. Fruit Band, Big Woes, Jolt and Debdepan will have music on the release, and play a launch night at Where Else on Saturday, August 16. Ticket and cassette bundle £15.97.
